      15th August 1936

Pretty Wedding at Highweek Parish Church

      Mr C. H. Tucker, R.A.F. and Miss E Jackson

A very pretty wedding took place at Highweek Parish Church on Saturday, the bride being Miss Ethel Jackson, the elder daughter of Mr and Mrs C E Jackson, of 105 Broadlands Avenue, Newton Abbott and bridegroom Mr Charles Harold Tucker, L.A.C., R.A.F., of H.M.S. Aircraft Carrier Furious.
The brides father is the popular car park attendant at the Odeon Cinema. where following the marriage ceremony, the bridal party attended to witness a presentation by the Manageress (Miss M Jefferys) to the happy couple of a hanging bracket with inset barometer as a tribute of goodwill from the Odeon Management and staff. Later in the day the whole party were the guests of the Odeon at a performance of the lastest Chaplin film "Modern Times". It was a modern way of celebrating a wedding, as well as being a pleasing gesture on the part of the management of the Odeon.
The bridegroom is the second son of Mr E F Tucker the owner of the Phoenix Hotel, Plymouth and the late mrs Tucker.
The Choral Ceremony was conducted by the Rector of High week, Rev J Maurice Key, M. A. and the church had been prettily decorated for the occasion by two of the bride's friends, Mesdames Warren and Howard. Mr A. H. Lanfear was at the organ and the hymns "How welcome was the call" and "The King of love" were sung.
Given away by her father the bride wore a gown of white satin beaute with a four yard train and a halo of orange blossom with a pleated tulle veil seven yards in length. This was trimmed with silver decorations and held in position by a pair of Air Force Wings. A lovely bouquet of scarlet and white carnations completed the charming ensemble.
The Misses Phyllis Howard and Barbara Warren were the chief bridesmaids and the bride was also attened by little Mavis Drake and Gordon Reynolds as page boy. The first bridesmaid wore multi organdi whilst the second bridesmaid dress was of blue watered silk, both wearing mob-caps of royal blue tulle and carrying sprays of cornflowers. The little attendant was in pink tulle which was worn with a wreath of forget-me-nots and the page boy had a suit of white silk.
The bride's mother's dress was of maroon starred georgette and lace georgette hat with Pansy decoration and veil.
Mr Edward Pegram of H.M.S Furious carried out the duties of of best man. The bridal music included Mendelssohn's "Wedding March" and as the happy couple left the church the bells pealed out merrily.
After the presentation ceremony at the Odeon there was a reception at the home of the bride's parents and subsequntly Mr and Mrs Tucker left for a secret destination for their honeymoon the rest of the party returning to the Odeon as stated above. The bride travelled in a smart black and white silk dress with coat and hat to match. She recieved from the bridegroom a grey squirrel fur coat, her gift to the bridegroom being a gold ring. The bridesmaids' gifts to the bridegroom (sic)? were gold wrist bangles.
Among many gifts recieved by the happy couple were a linen basket from the staff of Messers. Marks and Spencers where the bride was employed and a travelling trunk from H.A. Flying Squadron, H.M.S. Furious.
