25 | The emigrant ship "Cataraqui', 900 tons, struck a reef on the west coast of King Island off Tasmania's north west 'corner' during a heavy squall early on the morning of 4 August 1845. Of the 415 persons on board, there were 369 emigrants, & 46 crew, which included two doctors. More than half onboard were women and children (73). On the evening of 3 August, in Bass Strait, Captain Finlay ordered that the ship stop. There was a fierce gale blowing & rain was falling hard. The captain's intention was to wait until daylight before continuing on. According to a survivor, at the urging of the ship's doctors, the captain gave orders for the ship to start its voyage agaiain at 3am, while still in darkness. At 4.30am, the ship struck the reef and its hold began to fill with water immediately. The crew came on deck and began to assist passengers on to the top deck. But many remained trapped below & were drowned as the ship filled with water. Heavy seas rolling across the top deck carried people away. Captain Finlay told survivors to hang on to the part of the ship that was above water until daylight came. At dawn, perhaps 200 had survived. At 5am the ship broke apart and more were drowned, lea For the survivors there was still hardship. They could find only a little food that had been washed ashore and no water. They searched for other survivors or a source of water but could find neither. After sleeping the night in the bush they fouound a cask of water that had come ashore during the night. Later in the morning they were discovered by a whaler, who with his crew was also wrecked and living on the island. The whaler had noticed debris from the wreck and had set out to searcrch the island for survivors. He was able to light them a fire and provide them with food. The whalers' ship had been wrecked, so the survivors couldn't leave the island by their boat. They built a hut to shelter themselves and remained there for five weeks, provided with food by the similarly marooned whalers. On 7 September, smoke from their fire attracted a ship, 'the Midge', which took them off the island & carried them to Melbourne. News of the ship's wreck did not reach England more than eight months after she set fort Southwold Diary of James Maggs 1818-1876 states:- 1846 - Feby 7th Newspapers announce the loss of the "Cataraqui" C.
